Contactless cards and passports contain a small chip that can be read wirelessly at close range. RFID skimming is when someone tries to read that chip without your permission, for example in a crowded terminal.
How big is the risk?
To be honest, it's low. Contactless payments use one-time codes for each transaction, which makes skimmed data hard to reuse, and the reader has to be very close to your card. For most travelers, a lost or pickpocketed wallet is a much bigger risk than skimming.
Simple ways to protect your cards
- Keep cards and your passport in a front pocket or zipped bag, not a back pocket or open tote.
- Turn on transaction alerts in your bank app so you spot unusual charges quickly.
- Use your phone's wallet (Apple Pay or Google Pay) where you can. It adds another layer of security.
- Carry only the cards you need for the trip, and keep a backup card separate.
Where RFID blocking helps
An RFID-blocking wallet adds a simple layer of protection and peace of mind. Our zippered RFID passport wallet keeps your passport, boarding pass, and cards together, and the slim leather AirTag wallet adds RFID blocking plus a spot for an AirTag in case you leave it behind.
